Date: Celebrated annually on April 18
Whether you’re a kid or a kid at heart your love for these beastly shaped biscuits is hard to deny. Crack open a box and mark National Animal Crackers Day on April 18 with a crunchy bite of these sweetened snacks.
Typically they come in zoo or circus animal shapes such as bears, lions, elephants and monkeys. Introduced to the U.S. in the late 1800s children and parents learned to love the critter-shaped cookies and they were soon being produced by numerous bakeries. Today, more than 40 million packages of animal crackers are sold worldwide.
Since 1902, 54 different animals have been represented in the iconic Barnum’s Animal Cracker’s box. The koala bear was added to the animal line-up in 2002 beating out the penguin, cobra and walrus.
