National Pretzel Day

About National Pretzel Day

Date: Celebrated annually on April 26

These salty snacks had a rather auspicious start centuries ago when Catholic monks used leftover scraps of bread dough to form its distinctive knot shape, representing the holy trinity.
Years later in the 17th century their use evolved as symbols of marriage, which is how the expression ‘tying the knot’ came to be.
It’s said hard pretzels were created in the late 1600s when a Pennsylvania baker forgot a batch in the oven. Though dark and hard, he bit into the pretzel and was surprised by its pleasing flavor.
April 26 was declared "National Pretzel Day" by Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell in 2003 in recognition of the importance of the pretzel to the state's economy.
