Though perpetrators of this friendly, celebratory gesture can get carried away at times by over enthusiasts, there’s nothing better than slapping the hand of a colleague, boss, student or loved one in praise of a job well done.
The motion, which sees two people simultaneously raise one hand about head high and slap palms, is marked on the third Thursday in April with National High Five Day.
No one knows who started the high five, though theories abound. Two of the most repeated stories involve professional baseball and college basketball players in the late 1970s. (check out the link to see how the day now benefits charity)
